History and Information – Avery County

Avery County is in the western North Carolina mountains, which lies in the Appalachian Mountain Range. Avery County claims the highest average elevation of any county located east of the Rocky Mountains with the tallest peak being 6,165 feet above sea level. The county also claims the highest county seat in the Eastern US which is Newland, NC and the highest incorporated town Beech Mountain, NC.The county is the youngest of North Carolina’s 100 counties and was created in 1911. Avery County was formed from parts of Caldwell, Mitchell and Watauga County. The county is named after Waightstill Avery, which was a colonel in the American Revolutionary War. The county has a total area of around 247 square miles, and much of it rest in the Pisgah National Forest.

Avery County is known best for its large production of Fraser Fir Christmas Trees and for the tourism that helps to fuel the local economy. Christmas trees dot the country side and are shipped all over the United States. The many gated Communities, rental properties, ski slopes, attractions and shopping venues help to keep tourism alive in the High Country.

Avery County Attractions and Events

Avery County has an abundance of attractions and events that keep tourist coming back year after year. Grandfather Mountain is one of the county’s leading attractions and draws a large number of visitors each year. Grandfather Mountain is also the location of the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games that are held each year on the first weekend after the 4th of July. Other attractions include the Pisgah National Forest, Blue Ridge Parkway, Linville Falls, Elk Falls, Linville Gorge and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Other summer favorites include shopping, fine dining, white water rafting, hiking, Wildcat Lake, to name a few.

In the Fall the Woolly Worm Festival in downtown Banner Elk host a woolly worm race. The winning worm is claimed to predict the upcoming winters weather. At the festival guest can enjoy the many arts and crafts on hand. Other festivals and events include Oz Days on Beech Mountain, Oktoberfest on Sugar Mountain, and an annual Music Festival located in Newland. Visitors also come to Avery County just to view the changing of the leaves in the fall.

In the winter after temperatures and snow begins to fall, visitors from all around come to enjoy the many winter sports and activities that Avery County has to offer. The county has two ski resorts, Sugar Mountain Ski Resort and Ski Beech. Another attraction is Hawksnest Snow Tubing which is located on Seven Devils.
