Banner Elk Brief History

The area that surrounds the Elk River and makes up much of Banner Elk, was once known to be a popular hunting spot for the Cherokee Indians. The first known permanent settlers came to the area in 1848. These first settlers were Martin Banner and family; thus, the area became known as Banner’s Elk. The town came into existence in 1911 and the name was shortened to Banner Elk.

Some popular Banner Elk dining options are Stone Walls, Bayou, Bellas, Zuzda, Banner Elk Café, The Painted Fish, among others. Wineries and craft breweries are also a popular destination in the Banner Elk area.

Banner Elk Winery is a popular destination with several award-winning wines to choose from. Stop in at Banner Elk Winery every day but Monday from Noon to around 6 PM for wine tasting. The true wine lover can schedule a private tour and tastings with advanced notice. GrandFather Vineyard and Winery is another wine enthusiast must. Grandfather Winery also offers wine tastings with a variety of dry white and red wines. Nearby Breweries include Flat Top Brewing Co., Beech Mountain Brewing Co., and Blind Squirrel Brewery located in Plumtree North Carolina.

Banner Elk has Something for Everyone

The summers offer temperatures often ranging 10 to 20 degrees cooler than areas located anywhere from 30 minutes to a few hours away. The summertime climate allows locals and tourist alike to enjoy outdoor activities that may be uncomfortable in areas off the mountain. One of the main ongoing summer attractions in the area is the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games. Scottish clans come from all over to enjoy the many festivities that are offered the weekend of the games, which is held every July.

Banner Elk is bustling with activity in the fall with festivals such as the Woolly Worm Festival and the beauty of the changing fall leaves. The Woolly Worm festival has been a mountain tradition since 1978 and is held the third weekend of October. The festival is a woolly worm race up a three-foot piece of string, with the winner of the race having the honor of predicting the upcoming winter.

This winter wonderland is known as a magical winter escape, being one of the most popular winter destinations in the south. The small town is also the epicenter of an area often called the ski capital of the South. This quaint town sits between Sugar Mountain Ski Resort and Beech Mountain Ski Resort, each resort is only about a 15-minute drive away. If this is not enough winter snow fun, Hawksnest Snow Tubing and Appalachian Ski Mountain are a 30-minute drive or less from Banner Elk.

Many of the year-round residents benefit from the popularity of the area as the influx of tourist supplies jobs and other opportunities. Retirees and vacation home owners dot the area often enjoying one of the many gated communities that the area has to offer.
