Watauga County, NC was formed in 1849, using parts of Caldwell, Ashe, Wilkes, and Yancey counties. Historians believe that the county was named from a Native American word that described the Watauga River. The name has

various translations that are disputed today: from beautiful water to the river of islands, among others. Later, parts of Watauga County were used to help form both Mitchell and Avery County. The latest census reports that the county has a total area of 312.56 miles.

Boone is home to Appalachian State University which was founded in 1899.

Watauga County sits in the Appalachian Mountain range and includes a variety of mountainous elevations. Calloway Peak, which is part of Grandfather Mountain has the highest elevation in Watauga County at 5,964 feet above sea level. The county also lays partial claim to Beech Mountain which is the highest incorporated town east of the Mississippi River and Boone has the highest elevation of any city with over 10,000 inhabitants in the Eastern United States.

One of the biggest things that draw visitors and part-time residents to Watauga County is the mild summertime climate, the fall changing of the leaves, and the snowfall that helps to propel the ski slopes in the winter. The county is also home to one of the areas ski slopes, Appalachian Ski Mountain.

Popular Watauga CouWatauga County Viewnty communities include Beech Mountain, Blowing Rock, Boone, Deep Gap, Foscoe, Seven Devils, Sugar Grove, Todd, Valle Crucis, Vilas, and Zionville. Boone and Blowing Rock are the primary towns and draw thousands of visitors a year. The most famous people in the area are country musician Al Hopkins, which was b
orn in the county in 1889 and Doc Watson, which was born in Watauga County and maintained a residence in the area until his death.

Tourism has become Watauga County’s biggest industry and is attributed to the area’s climate, geographical l
ocation, and terrain. Popular outdoor activities include skiing, golf, whitewater rafting, hiking, mountain biking, among others. Known as North Carolina’s oldest theme park Tweetsie Railroad brings many visitors to the High Country.
